Saint-Gobain Marine congratulates MS “Medstraum” for its ward Ship of the Year* 2022

Medstraum is the first fully electric and zero-emission fast ferry in the world. Several Saint-Gobain Marine solutions, in particular insulation products sold by Glava, have been selected for this project, in order to contribute to the weight reduction of this vessel.

To date, Medstraum is classed as a high-speed ferry and also the most technologically advanced and innovative. It has started its journey earlier this year. It was the result of a long reflection thanks to the good functioning of the Norwegian maritime industry and the full involvement of the Minister of Climate and Environment in the project. Usually, the fastest ships are the most polluting. To limit their carbon footprint, the cluster formed by Maritime Cleantech engaged and encouraged their suppliers notably to avoid fossil fuels, to reduce the thickness of the structural divisions and to optimise weight wherever possible.

  • It's fully dimensioned with 30 m length, 9 m width and weighs 260 tons
  • Its route speed is 23 knots.
  • The boat has on board 2 Dolphin Power Lithium battery systems - located on the deck - and a newly developed propulsion system which efficiency is around 80%

  • CO2 emissions are reduced by 1,500 tons, equivalent to 30 buses every year

Reducing weight thanks to light and sustainable Saint-Gobain Marine solutions

Saint-Gobain Technical Insulation through its subsidiary Glava, has delivered lightweight glass wool insulation, providing the highest thermo-acoustic comfort, combined with a significant weight reduction compared to alternative insulation solutions: Glava Marine Roll 16 100mm and second layer Glava Marine Roll 16 Alu 50mm.

*Each year, since 1997, the maritime publication Skipsreyyen awards an outstanding ship for its innovative solutions that can be supported by new vessels. The 2022 edition opens a new era of possibilities for future boats in green shipbuilding. Among the competitors, MS Viking Polaris and MS Ryfylke were also nominated.
